Reader's Workshop
I completely embrace the workshop model. It is a great opportunity to differentiate for each and every student.
Recently in Third Grade we have been focusing on C.A.F.E. strategies, character traits, and banning overused words.
October:
Said is DEAD
We read aloud from The True Story of the the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka and kept a tally mark of how many times the word SAID was used. It was far more times than we wanted to count!
While at their various stations during Reader's Workshop, students kept track of other words they found being used instead of SAID,
We regrouped as a class and the students created a list of 60 words to use instead of SAID!

Students displayed these words outside our classroom as ghosts flying up and away from Said.
Later students stored the words in their Writing binders to use for inspiration and editing.
November:
Sad is BAD!
Happy is Tacky!
After the success of Said is Dead, we continued in the month of November with sad and happy.
Again students searched for exciting words to replace an overused and boring word.
Eventually, they found enough words for both happy and sad to create turkeys with a ton of feathers!

December:
Fun is DONE!, Fun has RUN its course!
Continuing on with our monthly exile of a boring word from Room 18, we decided to eliminate the word FUN! This time. I created the list of new words and the students had to decode their secret word.
in order to "crack the code" students had to complete a math excises on estimating and measuring with non standard units. For these interdisciplinary unit, students created life-size gingerbread men and used them to measure to different checkpoints in the lobby.
