Math Stations for Place Value

Math Stations for Multiplication and Divison

Math Station Layout

In my classroom, we have five different math workshop stations that the students rotate through visiting once or twice during the week. Each day we start math with a 15-20 minute mini-lesson, then students transition to two different stations during their math block. All stations utilize "tracking sheets" that students then store in their math folders. Math folders are reviewed twice a week for me to monitor the progress of my students. During Practice Makes Perfect, students have the opportunity to correct errors in their math folder.

Students are regrouped at least twice a week after completing a round of math stations. This keeps the grouping fluid and allows students to be moved around according to their specific needs.

At the end of each mini-lesson, groups are reviewed and sent to their first station. A timer is kept on the smartboard so students know how much time at each station. Each group has a "Captain" that is responsible for making sure the group is ready to move onto the next station and all materials are cleaned up properly.

A magnetic board represents the stations and the rotations. Team captains are also responsible for knowing where their group needs to transition to when the bell rings. This sense of ownership and responsibility keeps students on task.

My Math Stations:

Teacher Time:Students work in a small group at the table with the teacher. This time can be used to review concepts from the mini-lesson, work in-depth on multistep word problems, introduce new activities for independent work stations, review concepts a group may be struggling with, review old topics, or challenge enrichment students.

Terrific Technology:Students work with technology in the classroom (iPads, computers, Smartboard, etc.) to review and enrich topics worked on during mini-lessons, or to practice fact fluency.

Games Galore:An independent station for students to play games related to topics covered in mini-lessons or in previous units. Each game has a tracking sheet to monitor student progress.

Practice Makes Perfect: An independent work station designed to enhance information covered during the mini-lessons. Each activity is designed to be "never ending" allowing students to stay occupied so the teacher can focus on small group work at teacher time.

Wildcard: This station is a great flex tool. Sometimes it is used as a second visit to one of the other stations (example: sometimes two groups might be at Practice Makes Perfect or a group may be at an extra Teacher Time with a tutor). It can also be used for activities that don't quite fit into the other stations, and for review materials. I like to put out materials from previous units at Wildcard to help students revisit and refresh older concepts. Also a great station for fact fluency work.
